Hidalgo County cuts nearly 40% of Election Day polling sites

In November 2024, Hidalgo County voters could pick from 109 Election Day polling places. This Nov. 3, there will be 69. For Edinburg voters who have walked through the same school, church, or center door for years, the week before early voting opens comes down to one question: will that door still open for me — and if it won't, where do I go instead? Here is what changed, and the two-minute way to check before you leave the house.

Fewer Doors This Year

For the November 5, 2024 general election, Hidalgo County operated 109 countywide Election Day polling places. For the November 3, 2026 election, KRGV reported the county will open 69, with sites open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

What has not changed is the rule that matters most: Hidalgo County is a vote-center county, so any registered voter can cast a ballot at any open polling location in the county — not just the site nearest home. The Hidalgo County Elections Department confirms that Hidalgo County voters may cast their ballot at any polling location in the county on Election Day, not just the site nearest their home.

Edinburg's Polling Places, Then and Now

Places Edinburg voters used on Election Day in November 2024 ran from the Elections Annex and Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance to San Carlos Endowment Center, Edinburg Parks & Recreation Center, and six school sites: Avila Elementary, B.L. Garza Middle School, JFK Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Longoria Middle School, and South Middle School.

That 2024 list is not a promise for 2026, so confirm your site on the official county schedule before you go. County election officials have flagged the Elections Annex in Edinburg and Lark Community Center in McAllen as especially popular 2026 sites and encouraged voters to consider other locations to avoid longer lines.

The Two-Minute Check

Know the calendar first:

  • Early voting runs Monday, Oct. 19 through Friday, Oct. 30, 2026.
  • Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026.
  • Early-voting hours at county locations run 7 a.m.–7 p.m., Oct. 19–24 and Oct. 26–30, and 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25.
  • The county will open 30 early-voting locations.

Edinburg's three early-voting locations are:

  • Elections Annex Building, 317 N. Closner Blvd., rear Annex Room
  • San Carlos Endowment Center, 107 N. Sunflower Rd., conference room
  • UTRGV, 1201 W. University Dr., Student Academic Center / ESTAC

To confirm your own location, use the Texas Secretary of State's My Voter Portal at teamrv-mvp.sos.texas.gov. Look yourself up under "Am I Registered?" with your VUID and date of birth, your Texas driver's license number and date of birth, or your name, county, and date of birth.

Because Hidalgo County is a vote-center county, the state portal and the county list show several countywide locations rather than one assigned precinct site. Polling locations are typically posted shortly before voting begins, so check again if you looked before the list went up. If your usual site is gone, you have not lost your vote — any open county location will take your ballot. Stuck? Call the Elections Department at (956) 318-2570 or email [email protected]. The office is at 2015 W. Jackson Creek Ave., Edinburg, open Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

The Elections Department's administrative office is at 2015 W. Jackson Creek Ave., while the Annex voting site is at 317 N. Closner Blvd., rear Annex Room. One address is where the department works; the other is where you vote. The surest protection against a wasted drive is to confirm your site through the state portal and the county list — not a remembered address.

If a polling-place change was not made clear to you, tell the office directly at (956) 318-2570 or [email protected], so the county can make sure the next neighbor does not miss it.
